WHAT IS KOSHER
Kosher means proper or fit. The laws of Kosher originate in the bible and are detailed in multiple sources of Jewish law. Some of the basic laws of Kosher are as follows:
Of course the laws of Kosher are extensive and much more complex than this. It is therefore mandatory that only Kosher certified ingredients can be used in a Kosher product.
KOSHER MEAT AND POULTRY
To become Kosher, the animal or fowl are slaughtered with exact precision by a highly trained slaughterer according to Kosher law. Once slaughtered, the animal or fowl are examined to ensure that all standards have been met and that the animal or fowl was not diseased and was free of blemishes. The animal or fowl is then prepared for use by removing any traces of blood from the meat.
Beginning from the time of slaughter, procedures and safeguards are in place to ensure that the integrity of the meat is not compromised. This means that no non-Kosher meat, poultry or any other ingredients can be mixed in with the Kosher supply.
Because of the intensive labor and steps involved in Kosher certification, there is an added cost in producing Kosher certified products.
